I adore Christmas!
Despite the cold weather, it is my very favorite time of the year. On an personal level, Christmas is a season filled with hope, renewal and rejoicing. I love the hustle and bustle leading up to Christmas, the reverence in celebrating mass on Christmas Eve, the raw joy and innocence of belief in the eyes of children on Christmas morning, and the decompression and relaxation that I experience the following days!
On an design level, it is a time of contrasting beauty. I love the way white lights dance in the cold December winds and the way Christmas decorations seem to breath life into dormant landscapes and facades. I am inspired by these types of contrasting textures and materials when it comes to decorating my house for Christmas. The flowers, greenery and materials will varyfrom year to year, but the constants are the juxtaposition of textures, the use of natural materials, and the cherished items that have become a part of our family tradition.
I always start with a trip to the local flower market, and my favorite nursery to see what they have that is fresh, and I fill in with materials from my own garden. Here are some things that caught my eye this year.

While it is certainly not a unanimous sentiment, I really enjoy the pungent fragrance of paper whites at Christmastime.

I was drawn to the color palette and unusual textures of these materials.

Calla lilies have been another longtime favorite of mine, and this burnt orange color is an unpredictable but appropriate option for Christmas.

Magnolia branches are almost always a part of my Christmas. The smooth and shinny texture is great paired with the more rough textures of spruce and fir. And, the variation in the green and brown of the leaves gives depth to an arrangement….I only wish they were in bloom in December!

I grew up having a small tree in my bedroom, and I fondly remember an annual trip to a local shop to pick out an ornament each year. I have started that same tradition with my children for their rooms. Our family tree is a bit more planned, and covered in white lights with gold and glass balls. I love the simple and contrasting texture of the natural tree and the smooth and shinny formality of the ornaments.

These carved wooden reindeer are also a part of our Christmas tradition. I discovered them in an antique store several years ago, and knew I wanted them to be apart of our Christmas. I have placed them in several different spots over the years, but I especially like the silhouette effect when they are in the window.

Miniature red roses, berries and small pine cones that I collected on a trip to Pennsylvania are perfect contrasts that I used in this arrangement.

I would love to know what inspires your Christmas decorations and the traditions you share with your family each year!
So beautiful thanks for sharing!
Tulips and evergreens, lovely. Enjoy peaks inside your holiday home. Please give Geoff my best-Jennifer Case Webb (Hartsville, SC)
Thanks Jennifer! Merry Christmas to you as well.
Thank you for opening up the doors to your lovely home!
Like you, I prefer natural decor that expresses the beauty of the season – natural greenery, beautiful red and white flowers (it’s the only time I allow red in my house!), a fresh tree. When it comes to decorating the tree, though, anything goes – the colorful lights that were always on my childhood trees, lots and lots of uncoordinated and disparate ornaments! We tried a white light tree one year, and it did not feel right.
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas, and best wishes for a great 2012,
Holly
Thanks Holly, and Merry Christmas to you and your family! I hope is a great one in your new home!
