Last weekend I was honored to receive the Shutze Award from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for a project I did in Atlanta several years ago. I am so fortunate to be recognized by such an outstanding organization!
The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is a nationwide nonprofit organization, founded in 2002, that is dedicated to advancing the classical tradition in architecture, urbanism and their allied arts. The organization is a valuable resource for architects and designers because of the wide array of programs they host, including continuing education classes, travel programs, lectures and conferences. The Southeast Chapter of ICAA founded the Schutze Awards in 2006 as a tribute to the late Philip Trammell Shutze who was one of America’s finest classical architects.
Originally from Georgia, Philip Shutze studied classical architecture around the world before returning to Atlanta to work for the architectural firm of Hentz and Reid in 1920. In Atlanta, he designed and built some of the city’s most elegant homes and buildings.
Shutze was a master of proportion and scale and often times designed houses on an axis so that the surrounding landscape could be seen from focal points inside the house.
Well-known for his European-influenced style, Shutze also designed American colonial and Federal architecture, allowing him a wide range of talents. Eventually, Shutze received the title of “America’s Greatest Living Classical Architect.” I have had the privilege of working on the Patterson-Carr House pictured above.
Numerous houses in the Buckhead area are Shutze’s design, most notably the Swan House. Shutze built the classical style mansion for the Edward H. Inman family in 1928. The architecture of the Swan House is beautifully offset by 18th-century inspired gardens and landscape.
When the ICAA began the Shutze Awards, the organization wanted the award to represent the contribution Shutze made to the architectural community. The Shutze Awards are given for small, large and , multi-family residential design, commercial projects, interior design, craftsmanship, renovation and landscape and garden design.
The house I submitted for the Shutze awards was published in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles in April 2010, and is on the website so you may recognize the photos. What you may not know is that this house underwent a major renovation with Norman Askins at the helm. Many architectural details were added to the space including the barrel vaulted coffered entry ceiling, the sun porch with custom metal doors and windows and a reconfigured kitchen, bathroom and butler’s pantry.
The goal of the redesign was to define the space into a more human scale, add significant architectural detailing, while allowing for a better flow for entertainment purposes.
The clients has some beautiful existing antiques and art that we incorporated into the interior, but the majority of the pieces were purchased on shopping trips to New Orleans, Charleston and New York. In order to create inviting spaces, we layered subtle patterns with many different textures throughout the interiors allowing the silhouettes of the antique furniture, the dressmaker detailing and the fine art to become the focal points. We combined these elements in a casual way so that everyone that enters will feel at home.
