A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending an evening with some of Birmingham’s finest design talent and one of my favorite interior designers, Suzanne Rheinstein. I had met Suzanne briefly last December in NYC. I was installing an apartment in Manhattan two weeks before Christmas, (which is quite a story in itself) and I was invited to a holiday book signing for her new book, At Home: A Style for Today with Things from the Past. If you don’t have it in your library, I highly recommend adding it! I was thrilled to see her again in my hometown, and spend some time discussing the current state of the design industry. In a time of mass production, bold “pops” of color, and mid-century modern trends, her work inspires me to stay true to classic principles of design. Suzanne, a native Southerner, is approachable, gracious, and genuine, all characteristics that translate into her beautiful interiors and other endeavors.

Suzanne’s Home Collection line of custom upholstery, furniture and lighting is also available through Hollyhock. I especially love the upholstered chairs. I am always looking for antique chairs with clean lines and custom details. Many of these designs are inspired by classic designs, but have updated detailing.

Hollyhock for Lee Jofa is Suzanne’s fabric line which was inspired by her personal collection of prints, weaves and embroideries. Lee Jofa is a line that I use often for textured prints, and Suzanne’s collection for them is wonderful. It incorporates beautiful natural fibers, subtle patterns, and the blue-green-neutral color palate that I find so peaceful.
If you spend some time with her book and browsing her collections, I think you will find her as inspiring as I do!
Thoroughly enjoyed this post. I am going to enjoy Suzanne tomorrow morning- she will be speaking at the Antiques Show sponsored by the Greenville County Museum of Art. Her book is superb!
