For our first installment of “Shop Talk” I want to introduce you to my friend Barry Hutner, owner of Parc Monceau Antiques in Atlanta. Not only is he kind and thoughtful, he has a wonderful eye and has provided so much inspiration for my work over the years. His shop is a three story town house that is packed to the brim with fabulous antiques ranging from 18th c. French and English to Mid-Century. He carries fine signed pieces to charming and more casual furniture, mirrors, lighting, porcelian and accessories. I was just in his shop this week and I am always impressed by how many beautiful pieces there are in one place, and surprised by how long it takes me to look at all of it! Of course many of my clients have wonderful things from Barry, but some of my favorite pieces of furniture and accessories in my own house came from him too. If you are ever shopping in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, Parc Monceau is not to be missed.

Tell us a little bit about the history of the shop.
I opened up Parc Monceau in 1996. I left the practice of law, so it was an interesting and hard transition, but I am very happy I did.

What inspired you to enter the antiques business?
Unlike most people, I don’t play golf, fish, or ski. My sport is antiquing. I love the thrill of the hunt and seeing where it takes me. I thrive off of finding rare and beautiful things that others don’t see on a daily basis. My great aunt was truly a collector, and she taught me the difference between good, bad, and great antiques. She inspired me and I started collecting and buying at the age of 8.

What is your specialty?
We specialize in home furnishings of quality and elegance. We have one of a kind pieces that don’t go out of style. This kind of shopping experience is becoming more and more rare.

What is one thing that would surprise others about you?
Most people would be surprised that I practice yoga. My priorities have shifted over the years, and yoga has certainly helped me to focus and be present in my life. I also go to Julie Wallace, one of Atlanta’s top trainers, three times a week. She is my secret weapon!

What are your favorite books right now?
I love all of Alain de Botton’s books, but my favorite is The Architecture of Happiness. Also, I really enjoy reading The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times every day.

Do you have any travel tips for your favorite destinations?
The English countryside is great, but one of my favorite destinations is the country of Turkey. The food is incredible and kept local and fresh, and the people are very friendly. While Istanbul is magical and exotic, Bodrum is a 70’s jet set beach resort that is not to be missed. There is nothing like going there, renting a boat, and just relaxing.

What do you want readers to know about your shop?
I hand select everything in my shop and am constantly buying new and exciting things. I am the only one that buys and I strive to have timeless pieces.

What are your favorite shops to visit?
In Atlanta, I get all of my clothing from Sid Mashburn because of their great selection and fit, and also at Ferragamo and Neiman’s. Bacchanalia, Floataway, Paul’s, and Blue Ridge Grill are some of my favorite go to spots for delicious food.
