Design Leadership Summit and Rud. Rasmussens

Last spring I was honored to be invited to the annual Design Leadership Summit which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. I enjoyed meeting many industry partners and designers whose work I have admired for years, and now consider friends. It was an action packed three days (and nights), filled to the brim with lectures from leaders in architecture, interiors, and editorial worlds of design. We were treated to behind the scene tours of museums, factories, and homes. And, in the process were exposed to some of the best Danish design and culture have to offer. You can read more about DLS and my take home points at All the Best.

One of my favorite visits was to the three story showroom and workshop of the furniture company Rud. Rasmussens.  Seeing their workshop and process first hand gave me a real appreciation for the effort and craft that goes into their products. The company started in 1869, making it one of the oldest furniture companies in Denmark.  Today it is owned by the fourth generation of the family and operates out of the same charming building.  Originally, Rud. Rasmussens made furniture that was heavy in feel and proportion, but they began collaborating with Danish architects in the 20′s which changed the look of the line to the refined and sophisticated aesthetic it is known for today.  Their impressive collection includes classic designs from Kaare Klint, Mogen Koch, Mogen Lassen, H.J. Wegner, Borge Mongensen, Ole Wanscher, and Bernt, and are widely recognized in the design world.

Each piece of furniture is crafted onsite with traditional techniques by hand.  Below are some photos from my visit.

The drying cellar.  It is common for wood to stay in here for 12 months, since they will not use it for furniture making until its moisture level is below 9%.

Seeing true hand-tied spring gives you an appreciation for how much work goes into good upholstery.

Rud. Rasmussens is know for using goat leather from the highlands near the Niger River. It has a very dense texture and provides great strength.  These hides are often more rough and natural, which is precisely what gives the material its distinctive beauty. Here are a few of my favorite pieces.

After witnessing their furniture making process first hand, I can appreciate their claim that furniture pieces from Rud. Rasmussens often last longer than the trees used to make them were alive.

Wonderful blog. Beautiful pics. I wish I could afford some of that Rasmussen furniture.
My favorite thing to do in Copenhagen is cycle around endlessly and aimlessly and visit the Louisiana museum.
